Our winters are short, but they can be brutal. Sometimes our pools can get neglected during the winter, and I can understand that, however, they do require attention during freezing weather. The damage can be costly if you forget to insulate and make adjustments to the pump schedules. Here is a list of Do's, Don'ts, and ways to prepare prior to any freezing weather.

Cold Weather Prep:

  • insulate all exposed pool plumbing & the backflow valve for your autofill

  • check your freeze protection is working and set the trigger temp

  • if you have a robot cleaner, remove from the pool and put it away

  • regularly clean out your cleaner bags, skimmer baskets, pump baskets

  • regularly backwash your DE or sand filter & clean your cartridges

  • repair any leaks you've noticed by your equipment

🔌 Instructions with power…

🥶 set your pump(s) to run 24/7 at higher RPMs until temps rise above freezing

🥶 run all pumps, this includes water features and cleaners

🥶 if your equipment is on the north side and gets direct wind, create some sort of wind break ** do NOT cover equipment that is running

🛑 Instructions if you lose power…

🥶 be sure all breakers are turned off to the pool equipment

🥶 open the air relief on your filter

🥶 remove drain plugs from all pumps, heaters, filters

🥶 remove pump lids & chlorinator lids

🥶 put pool floats in the pool to help absorb any pressure from ice forming on the surface of the pool

** this is only if your equipment has NO power **

❌ DO NOT USE ❌

🛑 electric heaters

🛑 electric blankets

🛑 portable gas heaters

🛑 heat lamps
